Emma and Ryan Gosling will star in Damien Chazelle's Musical 'La La Land'

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are such magnetic personalities individually, it's not a shock that Hollywood has been eager to see what happens when they get matched up on the big screen. Their first effort "Crazy, Stupid, Love" was a decent enough airplane movie that kind of lost it in the third act, while "Gangster Squad" is probably best not discussed. But if all works out, their third film could be the most promising yet.

Deadline reports that Gosling and Stone are replacing the previously attached Miles Teller and Emma Watson in "Whiplash" director Damien Chazelle's musical "La La Land." Previously described as a cross between "The Graduate" and "Boogie Nights" (but, obviously, with music), the story is set in Los Angeles, and follows a young couple — actress, Mia and jazz pianist, Sebastian — who try to keep their relationship together in a city of cutthroat careerism.

"It's gonna be this MGM-style film with big song and dance numbers. The models are 'Singin’ In The Rain,' 'A Star is Born,' 'Gentleman Prefer Blondes,' 'Meet Me in St Louis,' etc., but also the French New Wave, Jacques Demy, 'Umbrellas of Cherbourg,' " Chazelle told us about the film last fall. "Definitely a completely different register than 'Whiplash,' but hopefully — I like movies that go for broke, so hopefully it'll have the same energy. The mood will be different, though."

So yes, sign us up for this one. Production is aiming to get underway this fall.

4/30/15 Update: Lionsgate have announced a release date for the film: July 15, 2016. Here's the official synopsis:

From Summit Entertainment.  In this modern take on the Hollywood musical from Damien Chazelle, the Academy Award-nominated writer and director of WHIPLASH, Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) are drawn together by their common desire to do what they love.  But as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart.

Emma and Steve Carell to star in Fox Searchlight's new movie ‘Battle Of The Sexes'

EXCLUSIVE: A surprise entry in the race to mount the seminal film about the gender battle tennis match that scored the highest TV ratings since the Moon Landing: Fox Searchlight has set a fall start for Battle Of The Sexes, with Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris directing Emma Stone as Billie Jean King and Steve Carell as Bobby Riggs. Simon Beaufoy wrote the script and the film’s being produced by Danny Boyle through his Decibel Films and Christian Colson through his Cloud Eight banner. That gives Searchlight a project with as good a prestige pedigree as you’re going to find, by the makers of some of Searchlight’s biggest hits: Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours (Beaufoy, Boyle, Colson), Little Miss Sunshine (Dayton & Faris and Carell) and Birdman (Stone). Beaufoy (who also scripted the FS hit The Full Monty) has quietly been working several years on the script, with cooperation from King (Riggs died in 1995). It is ready to go.

This puts Searchlight in fine shape against two rival projects. HBO and Playtone just set Proof scribe David Auburn to write one that has Elizabeth Banks to play King and Paul Giamatti playing Riggs. Chernin Entertainment and Gary Sanchez are percolating the film Match Maker with Steve Conrad writing and Will Ferrell attached to play Riggs.

Battle of the Sexes will be ready for release in 2016, when the public will likely again be focused on the subject of gender and what a woman is capable of. Hillary Clinton should be full swing into her campaign to re-enter the White House, this time as president. The story of King and Riggs became a zeitgeist event back in 1973, when the 29-year old No. 2 ranked female star rose to the challenge and beat the 55-year old retired former Wimbledon champion Riggs.

The film will be presented as a comedy with dramatic and political overtones, handled in the quirky warm and engaging way that Little Miss Sunshine was. King and Riggs became the representatives for their gender, even though each was a complicated person trying to figure out their place in the world. At that time, they had to do it under the glare of an unprecedented media spotlight.

WME reps Boyle, Carell, Stone and King; Dayton & Faris are repped by UTA.

Emma & Ryan Gosling may reunite in ‘La La Land’

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are both circling the romantic musical La La Land. We first reported on the project back in June 2014, when Miles Teller and Emma Watson were attached to star, but Miles Teller has moved on and Emma Watson was forced to drop out due to her commitment to Disney's Beauty and the Beast. No deals are finalized for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone quite yet, but Deadline reports that all parties are trying to make this happen.

The story centers on the budding romance between a jazz pianist and an aspiring actress in modern-day Los Angeles. While both quickly fall for one another, they discover how difficult it is to maintain a relationship along with their artistic endeavors. If both stars sign on, the plan is to move forward and start production sometime this fall. The project would also mark the third movie Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have starred in together, following Crazy Stupid Love and Gangster Squad

The project will mark writer-director Damien Chazelle's follow-up to his critically-acclaimed Whiplash, which was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, although the filmmaker actually wrote the script for La La Land before Whiplash. Jordan Horowitz (The Kids Are All Right) is producing alongside Fred Berger (Taking Chance). Ryan Gosling recently made his directorial debut with Lost River and he will next be seen on the big screen in The Nice Guys. Emma Stone starred in Best Picture winner Birdman and she will next be seen in Aloha and Irrational Man
