New Emma Interview with Vogue

On a sunny New York City morning, Emma Stone is perched at the table of her Hudson Hotel suite looking disarmingly fresh-faced and all-American—that is, with the exception of her eyelashes. Long, dark, and practically ceiling-sweeping in scope, they infuse her look with just the kind of Hollywood glamour that has kept her firmly planted on the right side of leading-lady territory in recent years.

According to Stone, 11:00 a.m. is definitely not too early to be wearing loads of inky black mascara. “I put it on every morning. I look like a ghost without it when I’m blonde,” says the actress, who has recently dyed her hair a sunny shade of platinum in order to reprise her role as Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man sequel, which she is currently filming in New York. (For the record, she does miss her signature auburn color. “I love the red,” she admits with a laugh.)

Of course, there’s also the fact that Stone, who is the face of Revlon, is celebrating the launch of the iconic beauty company’s new lengthening and volumizing Lash Potion formula, out this month.

“It’s not a light and feathery kind of thing. It’s intense, which I like,” she says of the more-is-more formula (which can be hunted down at select stores this month before launching nationwide in May).

Major eyelashes aside, she says, she is otherwise something of a beauty minimalist. Here, Stone chats with Vogue about her favorite go-to beauty products and inspirations.

What are your daily essentials?
“I’m allergic to everything so I just use extra virgin olive oil on my skin because I know it won’t cause a reaction. At night, I take off my makeup with coconut oil. And I always have Josie Maran Argan Oil with me. That was a game changer. I think my makeup artist, Rachel Goodwin, first introduced me to it and I love it. ”

If we spilled out your makeup bag right now, what would be in it?
“Mascara and concealer, because I always have a few spots to cover up. I have a Make Up For Ever concealer that I think is really great. The Revlon [Lash Potion] mascara is what I use every day.”

How many swipes per eye before you’re done?
“Three or four, if I had to estimate.”

What do you prefer to focus on for major events: Eyes or lips?
“Eyes. Because I’m constantly licking my lips. It’s a nervous habit. I have a lot of lipstick going through my system.”

Have you learned any beauty tricks or lessons on set recently?
“On Gangster Squad, I learned that it takes a lot of makeup to blot out freckles. It’s concealer, foundation, concealer, foundation, over and over. Then powder. It was intense.”

Who’s in charge of your many hair-color transformations for roles?
Tracey Cunningham in L.A. and Marie Robinson in New York. They’re symbiotic. They have conversations about my hair.”

Who are your beauty icons?
Diane Keaton. She’s a true original, she has aged naturally and she is completely herself. And Marion Cotillard. It’s like someone dreamed her up. She looks like she’s constantly in soft focus. I don’t understand how she does it.”

Who’s your beauty dream team before major events?
“Rachel for makeup and Mara Roszak for hair. I talk about the look with my stylist Petra [Flannery] first and then she sometimes sends them pictures of what I’m wearing. We’ve been working together for so long that I really trust them.”

Speaking of the red carpet, what designers are you loving at the moment?
Chanel. And always Lanvin. Also, having met Alber [Elbaz], he’s just a genius. I don’t think he’s ever designed something I didn’t like. He really loves women and making them feel their best. We went to the Met Ball last year together. It was incredible.”
